Magnetic Closure Rigid Box Specifications: Magnet Strength, Доска, Вставки, and Shipping

Оглавление

A magnetic closure rigid box lives or dies on one gesture: the lid swings down and pulls itself shut. Behind it sits a real construction — grayboard walls, wrapped panels, hidden magnets, and an insert that decides where the product rests. Most sourcing problems with magnetic closure boxes start when an RFQ holds only a reference photo and a target price. Every detail left unsaid returns later. It reappears as a lid that stays open, a magnet bump showing through the paper, or an uncomparable quote.

This guide walks the specification layer from the buyer’s side of the table. It covers what a magnetic closure is built from and how to state magnet strength so a supplier can verify it. It shows how board and magnet placement interact, how inserts and transit change closure behavior, and what belongs in an RFQ. Where a figure depends on the build, we mark it for confirmation rather than inventing it.

What Does a Magnetic Closure Consist Of?

A rigid box wall is a core of grayboard wrapped in printed paper or a similar facing, with a lining inside. The closure adds three elements. The first is magnets embedded in the lid wall, sometimes in the base too. The second is a matching steel plate or opposing magnet on the panel they meet. The third is the combined wall thickness between them — the air gap.

Two arrangements cover most production. In the first, magnets in the lid attract mild steel plates fixed inside the base. In the second, magnet pairs face each other across the overlap, one set in each wall. Neither is better outright — each changes build method, wall flatness, and how lid and base register on closing.

Closing feel is decided by those magnets, the thickness and stiffness of the wrapped panels, and the lid-to-base fit working together. One pair of magnets per edge suits compact boxes; wider lids need more engagement points. Those are exactly the parameters a bare “magnetic gift box” brief leaves undefined. They are also what the rest of this article turns into checkable fields, as in the builds behind our custom magnetic perfume boxes.

What Magnet Types Are Used in Paper Packaging?

Two families dominate paper packaging:

Magnet familyHow it behaves in the build
Flexible magnet stripA rubber/ferrite composite supplied as strips or rolls. Modest in strength for its volume, but easy to cut and able to run continuously along an edge in a shallow channel.
Rigid magnet blocksUsually neodymium, sold under industry grade designations. A small block carries noticeably more pull for its size, but it is brittle, wants a routed recess, and typically arrives with a protective plating.

Two traps. Первый, a grade designation is a materials classification, not a pull-force figure. Two suppliers can quote the same grade with different measured performance, depending on magnet size, pole orientation, and assembly. Ask for data, not the label. Второй, magnetization direction decides whether two parts attract or fight — strips can be magnetized through the thickness or through the length, so pole orientation belongs in the RFQ. On plating and corrosion: unless the supplier confirms the coating system, treat chemical and moisture resistance as a question to ask.

How Do You Specify Holding Force?

A usable RFQ describes the closure in two registers. The first is closure feel: a firm snap, a soft damped pull, or near-invisible resistance that still self-closes. Because feel is subjective, agree it against a physical sample, in writing, before tooling.

The second is holding force: the pull needed to separate the closed panels perpendicular to the wall. This is where bare gauss numbers fool buyers. The meter reads surface field, and the reading shifts with probe distance, calibration, and the exact spot measured. So gauss claims are rarely comparable between suppliers.

Treat force as a data request rather than an invented standard. Ask each supplier to state three things, per supplier test data. Первый, тот метод измерения: pull direction and speed, and whether the magnet pair was tested alone or inside the finished wall assembly. Второй, тот conditions: the air gap, meaning the total wall thickness between magnet and counter-face. Note also the temperature, the units tested, and a figure reported as a minimum rather than a best case. Third, тот counter-surface used. One physical point explains the “strong on the demo, weak on the box” complaint. Holding force drops quickly as the air gap grows. Two wrapped walls plus a lining add more separation than the magnet was ever tested with.

The table below is that framework — for illustration only, every value left for supplier test data, because a number is only as good as the test behind it.

RFQ fieldHow it should be statedValue

And resist over-specifying: more force is not free. It makes the pack clumsier to open, adds cost, and pushes harder on thin panels. Match the force to the handling reality.

How Are Board and Magnet Placement Built In?

The grayboard core has to carry the magnet without betraying it. Three build routes cover most work. Routing a recess places the magnet flush inside the wall. Sandwiching sets it between the core and an inner backing layer. Gluing it to the inner wall hides it under the lining paper. Each route changes wall thickness, face flatness, and cost — and sets the air gap the magnets are tested against.

There is no universal board-thickness figure for magnetic boxes. The right core depends on box footprint, panel span, вес продукта, and magnet depth. Read your chosen grayboard against the supplier’s board specification rather than a remembered number from another program. A magnet merely glued behind thin paper, with no recess or backing layer, eventually telegraphs as a visible bump on a tight soft-touch face.

Alignment is the quiet killer. Lid-to-base fit is measured in fractions of a millimeter. Off-center magnets make the lid sit proud, skew on closing, or engage the counter-plate at its edge. Send magnet positions as dimensions on the drawing.

Placement also depends on the construction family. Collapsible magnetic boxes fold flat and carry magnets in panels that move. Pre-assembled rigid boxes capture magnets in fixed walls, trading the flat-pack saving for better register. Наш гид по collapsible versus pre-assembled rigid boxes walks that trade.

How Do Inserts Affect Internal Fit?

The insert is part of the closure system whether planned that way or not: it decides where the product rests relative to the lid. Three interactions recur.

Product height above the base wall: if a bottle or jar stands taller than the base panel, the lid contacts the product before the magnets fully engage. The closure then feels weak even with good magnets inside. Insert compressibility: a soft foam cradle lets the lid ride lower and changes engagement depth between units; a rigid flocked tray defines the lid’s stop position consistently. Base stability: when the product is heavy and the base loose, opening the lid drags the base toward the hand. The insert cavity should grip the base snugly against the wall.

Так specify the insert before signing off the closure: it changes what the magnets are asked to hold. For compartment layout and product positioning, see our article on choosing custom jewelry box inserts; insert-material comparisons are a separate subject we cover on the blog later this quarter.

How Does the Closure Behave in Transit?

Will the lid stay shut en route? The risk is mechanical, not a magnet-degradation story: magnet strength should not change meaningfully in ordinary parcel transit. What loosens a lid is everything else:

Transit forceWhat it does to the closure
VibrationShakes a loosely fitted lid until it hops out of the magnet engagement zone.
Drops and sortation impactsSnap an under-forced closure open.
Stack compressionBows panels inside the master carton, widening the air gap where force is already thinnest.

Validate as you would any packaging performance. Define the feel and force fields, get the supplier’s test data behind them, then test assembled samples rather than loose magnet pairs. A closure tested on a bench is not the closure that travels. For structured handling evidence, parcel-delivery test protocols exist at this risk class. The ISTA test procedures cover small-parcel vibration and drop sequences. Your supplier or lab can say which protocol fits your lane. Do not commit to a test line-item in the RFQ before that conversation.

Mitigations, in rough order of cost: tighten the lid-to-base fit so vibration has nothing to work on, or raise the holding-force spec. Or accept a secondary closure — belly band, tuck flap, or a mailer around the rigid box. That lets the magnets do presentation duty instead of transport duty. Many brands ship magnetic boxes inside an outer rather than exposing the lid to the carrier. How rigid packs ride inside pallet-loaded cartons is covered in our palletization and paper box shipping guide.

What Specification Checklist Should Buyers Send?

Here is the article compressed into one RFQ. Send it to two or three suppliers and the quotes become comparable line by line. Send less, and you are buying a photograph.

  1. Внутренние размеры (Д × Ш × В) and the product measured at its widest production sample.
  2. Product weight and material, since mass in the base changes what the closure fights.
  3. Grayboard thickness and magnet-mounting route — recessed, sandwiched, or inner-glued — per the supplier’s board specification.
  4. Magnet type, count, drawing-dimensioned positions, and pole arrangement (magnet-to-steel or magnet-to-magnet).
  5. Holding force with test method and conditions, per supplier test data; no bare gauss figures.
  6. Closure feel target, agreed against an approved physical sample.
  7. Lid-to-base fit tolerance and test engagement depth.
  8. Insert type, cavity depth, and product height above the base wall.
  9. Чистота поверхности — soft-touch lam, фольга, embossing — its own spec layer, since finish changes panel thickness and how magnet bumps telegraph; our luxury packaging finishing guide covers the menu.
  10. Secondary closure decision, if the pack faces carriers directly.
  11. Transit profile and validation plan — lane, штабелирование, assembled-sample testing.

If a worked example helps, the builds behind our custom magnetic jewelry box line show typical placements and panel details from our rigid range. Ask us for the spec structure, and we will walk the fields rather than the marketing copy.

Часто задаваемые вопросы

How strong should magnets be for a gift box?

No standard number exists, and a supplier quoting one without a test method is guessing. Define closure feel on a physical sample, then require measured holding force per supplier test data — method, air gap, and counter-surface named. The decision scales with lid size, вес продукта, and transit exposure.

Can magnetic closure boxes be collapsible?

Да. Collapsible magnetic boxes carry their magnets in folding panels, so the pack ships flat. Register is harder to keep consistent when the walls move, which makes the placement fields on the checklist more important, not less.

Do magnets weaken during shipping and cause boxes to open?

Magnet strength should not degrade meaningfully under normal transit conditions. A lid opening in transit is typically mechanical — vibration, drop impact, or panel bowing widening the air gap. Address it through fit, force verification, and secondary closures on rough lanes.

What grayboard thickness do magnetic boxes need?

It depends on box footprint, panel span, вес продукта, and magnet depth. Confirm against the supplier’s board specification and settle the mounting route in the same exchange, because that route sets the air gap the magnets get tested against.

Are rigid magnet blocks better than flexible strip?

Not by default — they trade. Blocks deliver more pull for their size but need recesses and careful handling; strip runs continuously along an edge and is gentler on assembly cost. Choice depends on wall construction, feel target, and unit economics.

Should I add a secondary closure for parcels?

Consider it whenever the lane is rough or the lid only lightly engages. A belly band, tuck flap, or mailer around the rigid box costs little next to a customer photo of an open lid.

What information do suppliers need to quote a magnetic gift box?

Размеры, вес продукта, board and mounting route, magnet type and positions with pole data, holding force with its test method, insert geometry, заканчивать, transit profile, and a sample-validation plan. That set turns three quotes into one comparison.

Заключительные мысли

A magnetic closure is a system, not a component. Magnets, толщина доски, mounting route, insert geometry, and the transit lane sit in one equation. Specifying one while shrugging at the rest is how strong magnets end up inside a lid that pops open anyway.

Work the specification in order. Define closure feel on a sample and demand holding-force data with the method named. Fix board and mounting route against the supplier’s own specification. Place the insert before signing off the lid, and validate transit on assembled packs. Every field that comes back as “to be confirmed” is one the next supplier must confirm too.

Send us the box size, толщина доски, вес продукта, and closure expectation.

PK Paper Box will confirm the magnet configuration and provide matching test references.
